Founder's Story

Why I Built PartnerFlo

A decade working in the IT channel. The same operational problems, at vendor after vendor. Eventually I stopped waiting for someone else to fix it.

I spent the better part of a decade working in and around the IT channel. In that time I managed partner programmes, worked alongside channel managers at vendors of every size, and watched the same story play out repeatedly: a vendor with genuine ambitions for their channel, a growing list of signed partners, and an operational reality that could not keep up with either.

The deals fell through the cracks because deal registration ran on email. The commission calculations were always slightly wrong because someone had updated the spreadsheet in a way that broke a formula three months earlier and nobody had noticed. The MDF budget sat unspent at quarter end because the claims process was so painful that partners had quietly stopped trying. The partner portal, where it existed at all, was a SharePoint folder with a logo on it.

None of this was the fault of the channel managers I worked with. They were smart, motivated people who cared about their programmes. The problem was the tools. The enterprise PRM platforms on the market were priced for companies with 10,000 partners and a team of consultants to implement them. Everything else was either a CRM module that was never designed for channel operations or a collection of spreadsheets held together with goodwill.

The Moment It Crystallised

There was a specific conversation that stayed with me. A channel manager at a mid-sized IT vendor was telling me about a partner who had gone dark. Six months earlier this partner had been one of their most engaged, registering deals regularly and running joint marketing with the vendor's MDF. Then nothing.

When she finally got the partner on a call, the reason was simple. Three commission payments had been late. Not dramatically late: three or four weeks each time. The partner had mentioned it once, been told it was a finance process issue, and then never raised it again. They just quietly redirected their sales effort toward vendors who paid on time. By the time the vendor noticed the drop in registrations, the relationship had already moved on.

That story represents everything that is wrong with how most channel programmes are run. The operational failures are small individually. Late commission payments, slow deal approvals, a portal that takes four clicks to find a one-pager. None of them feel critical. But they accumulate, and partners are paying attention even when they are not saying anything.

What I Wanted to Build

I wanted to build the tool I had wished existed throughout those years in the channel. Something that an IT vendor with twenty or thirty partners could set up in an afternoon and have running properly by the end of the week. Something their partners would actually want to use, not because they had to but because it was genuinely easier than any alternative.

The brief I wrote for myself was simple: everything a channel partner programme needs, nothing it does not, priced so that a growing vendor can afford it from day one. Deal registration with approval workflows that take seconds rather than days. MDF management that makes claiming straightforward enough that partners actually do it. Commission tracking that calculates automatically and pays reliably. A partner portal that looks like it was built in the current decade.

And critically: a vendor-facing dashboard that tells you what is actually happening in your programme. Not a spreadsheet you update manually. A live view of pipeline, partner activity, MDF utilisation, and commission status, so that the first time you find out a partner has gone quiet is not six months after it happened.

Who PartnerFlo Is For

PartnerFlo is built for IT vendors who are serious about their channel. You might have ten partners or you might have a hundred. You might be building your first structured programme or migrating away from a collection of spreadsheets that has served its purpose and then some. What you have in common is that you want your channel to be a real revenue driver, not just a list of names in a CRM.

The partners who use PartnerFlo tell us the same things. They notice that deal registrations come back quickly. They notice that their commission balance is always current. They notice that the portal is worth logging into because it actually has what they need. These are not complicated things to get right. But getting them right consistently is the difference between a partner who prioritises your product and one who treats it as a last resort.

What We Are Building Toward

Channel partner management is still a surprisingly underserved category. The big PRM platforms are built for enterprise complexity that most vendors do not need. The lower-end tools do not take the operational requirements seriously enough. There is a significant space in the middle for a platform that is genuinely capable without being unnecessarily complicated.

We are building toward that. The features on our roadmap are driven by the same thing that drove the initial build: real problems that real channel managers and real partners experience every day. If you are one of those people and you have thoughts, I am genuinely interested in hearing them.
